The psychiatric evaluation is the thorough initial assessment carried out by your psychiatrist. This first step is crucial for understanding your mental health state and identifying possible disorders. This evaluation covers your medical and mental history, psychosocial environment, family dynamics, and other essential aspects of your life that will allow your psychiatrist to establish an appropriate diagnosis. Subsequently, your psychiatrist will suggest a treatment plan, including self-care strategies, psychotherapy, medication, or a combination. Your psychiatrist will continue collaborating with you to monitor your progress and recovery.

A geriatric psychiatric evaluation is a specialized mental health assessment conducted by the psychiatric provider to address the unique mental health needs of older adults, often referred to as the geriatric population. This evaluation is tailored to understand and address the psychological, emotional, cognitive, and social aspects of mental health in the context of aging. The senior patient's specific aspects would be addressed during this evaluation, such as the risk of polypharmacy, support network, social needs, safety, nutritional status, frailty, and chronic health problems.

Psychiatric medication management is the ongoing process of prescribing, monitoring, and optimizing the medications used to treat mental health disorders. It involves collaborating with your psychiatric provider to ensure these medications' safe and effective use. Psychiatric medication management includes four main components: selection of the medication, beginning of treatment, regular monitoring, and long-term management to decide on continuing, changing, or stopping medications.
